Review on TOYOTA OEM Vacuum Switching Valve for Charcoal Canister by Dru Labrado

2000 Celica - New VSV temporarily fixed my P0440 trouble code which returned

. driving in my 2000 Celica every few days. Online research indicates a leak in the vacuum hose, tank cap, evaporator purge valve, vacuum switching valve, or/or evaporator adsorber. So I started checking and replacing parts, from cheapest/easiest to replace to most expensive; In that order, buying a new canister at the shop can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,300. The hoses aren't leaking, replacing the gas cap didn't help. Replacing the purge valve on the air cleaner intake box was a simple +$60, but it only improved the occasional rough idle. Code P0440 returned. I had to replace this vacuum switch which is under the car behind the muffler and its heat shield. What an awful place! I even bought new rubber mounts and dismantling pliers to prepare to disassemble the muffler blocking the canister, but I gave up as the rubber mounts were difficult to remove. With a small tool and a bit of swearing, I was able to remove the heat shield between the muffler and the canister. (Always use jack stands when crawling under a car.) Luckily, the original rubber hoses and electrical connector to the old VSV were long and nimble enough for me to close the zip-tie and reconnect the new VSV to the old one. This $40 valve did it; I've now got increased mpg (even better than the normal mpg before the problem started), massive power increase, smooth idle when stopping and no more P0440! Very happy, my old car feels like new again! Now I hope my vaporizer will last forever; I would not want to visit this horrible place under the silencer again. Toyota had to design the installation of the evaporator in the trunk next to the existing spare wheel. One final piece of advice to other Celica owners, get this Denso OEM valve and not the regular brands. Trust me you don't want compatibility issues when you see where the vaporizer tank is located. Update April 2, 2018 - Unfortunately P0440 returned after 500 miles. Now there is a difficult option to replace the entire canister.

Pros
  • after 500 miles. I keep my fingers crossed.
Cons
  • sad package
