I have an old laptop that only supports 2.4 GHz. It was working fine until about two weeks ago my Wi-Fi connection suddenly became horribly intermittent, most likely due to a new Wi-Fi extender installed by my neighbor. With only 3 non-overlapping channels (1, 7, 15) the 2.4GHz band is too crowded to find a free channel so I decided to move all my other devices to use the 5- Use GHz band only where I have many options. That's when I realized I needed to get a new USB-to-WiFi network card that supported 5GHz for my poor trusty old laptop. . The software installation went smoothly and the WLAN interface was immediately ready for use. At first I was concerned that my laptop only has USB2 ports, but it hasn't affected my use of the app. Although the NIC claims a 520Mbps connection in TX/RX, my ISP only has 50/3Mbps in DS/US and my local file server can only reach about 80Mbps, so the USB2 limit of about 400 Mbit/s I don't work. my bottleneck. Immediately after installing all the drivers, watching YouTube or surfing the web was fine until I had to use a remote desktop connection over Wi-Fi. I've noticed that my remote PC's screen freezes for about 1.5 seconds every 5-6 seconds. Sure enough, my ping test to a Wi-Fi hotspot gave me 1500+ ms rtt every 5-6 samples. It was unacceptable. I fiddled with all the mode combinations and power cycles to no avail until a simple reboot fixed the problem. Hopefully the performance will continue over time. Otherwise I will definitely come back and update the review. Update: It turned out that one of my Windows (FF) applications was using too many system resources. I think I keep too many YouTube tabs open. :D As soon as I close and restart this application, the lag will go away and be ok for a long time.
