If you already have a router, you probably don't need all the bells and whistles that go with it, and not being able to disable them can give you a headache . Among other things, this modem can register with your PPP information and also has a DHCP server. If (for example) you'd rather just use Linksys to provide PPP credentials and pass IP addresses, you need to set the modem to transparent bridge mode (that's what it says in the settings I think) for this to work Case is The DHCP server in the router is not affected. Also, the default IP address of this device is 192.168.0.1 while the default IP address of the Linksys router is 192.168.1.1. If you run both in your network out of the box, your modem assigns the IP address 192.168.0.2 to your router, which also assigns itself the IP address 192.168.1.1 and forwards IP addresses in the 192.168.0.2 range. 1,XXX range. This works and you can access the outside world from devices connected to the network through your router, but it's a little less elegant. My advice is to disable all modems on the modem and just run it in bridge mode. Set its IP address to 192.168.1.XXX so that it is in the same range as the devices connected to your router and enter your DLS/PPP credentials into your router to allow your router to connect to the outside world controls. I definitely recommend this modem, not just for the cheap price, but for all the options it offers for the price. I personally don't use them, but it's nice to know they're there when I need them.
