Review on ๐Ÿ“ก YoLink Motion Sensor: Longest Range Smart Home Wireless Motion Detector with Alexa & IFTTT Compatibility by James Pope

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Highly recommended: motion detector

We tested different devices for several weeks. I have to say that we are very satisfied. The first thing that struck us upon unboxing is that everything seems to be designed and made with attention to detail and care. It was a little unexpected for us. You often get cheap packaging and apps that look like they were made in a day. In this case it is not. We had to double check if it is a start-up company. From all outward signs, it appears to be an established company that has been in business for quite some time. All manuals and setup information are available online. Don't expect much in the box. Initially we had some trouble finding the information we needed, but we were and still are grateful for the company's quick response. at odd hours of the night. It was wonderful. But they were always friendly and helpful even when we had to check the product documentation first. The initial Wi-Fi setup was a little tricky. However, this is not due to product limitations. This is due to the limitations of the WiFi routers we use. The WiFi routers we used didn't allow us to separate the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. This system uses the 2.4GHz network required to provide range. At the end that simply connected the network hub to the router with the provided ethernet cable. Everything went pretty smoothly. Again. The system requires a 2.4 GHz WiFi network. If you're having wireless connection issues, the problem is almost certainly because your wireless router can't separate the two networks or is preventing the device from operating on 2.4GHz only. This is not a product limitation or defect. We recommend simply connecting it with an Ethernet cable, as the range is very long anyway. Before using the system, we recommend manually updating the firmware on all devices. Depending on how long it has been in Revain's warehouse, you may have an older firmware version and there may be some bugs. That was our case. We had several issues with broken notifications, which were fixed immediately after the firmware update. Update, find the firmware version in the device and tap it. The firmware will be updated automatically. However, if this is your first setup, it's best to update devices manually. We would like to see in the application the possibility to view the firmware status of all devices on one screen and manually initiate a firmware update for all devices from the same screen with one click. But this is just a wish, not a defect. Don't forget to edit the notification strategy before using the system. It seems that the app uses multiple strategies by default, which could mean that you get an app notification, email notification, or SMS notification every time something is opened or motion is detected. This could be taken care of from the app's development page, as you'll be prompted to choose the settings you want during setup. We had no problems with devices communicating with a network hub. The network hub has reported shutting itself down once or twice a night, but this appears to have been transient and related to the firmware update being automatically applied and the device automatically restarting. Battery life seems really good at the moment. We are amazed at the quality of the 3M tape on each one. Alcohol swabs are not provided, but we used plain rubbing alcohol and a cloth to clean the surfaces before sticking the devices on. You can do the same or just make sure it's really clean. As a test, we applied some of the devices to an unprepared/cleaned surface. These devices easily stick to the surface and do not fall off. They seem to be well secured when we try to pull them. We would like adhesive strips to be available for purchase as a replacement. We can see people moving devices along the way, say, changing their mind about location or whether they're moving. We also thought of an additional motion sensor mount so we can move the motion sensor from one place to another at different times. This was because we were only able to purchase a limited quantity at the time due to stock availability. But that's something others might want to buy later. Motion sensors have been updated to include a sensitivity adjustment. They can be very sensitive and can detect the slightest movement even in the dark. We have no complaints. The reach and distribution seems to be large. The door/window sensor works just as well. It can be installed in almost any orientation and will still work as long as the touching part of each part is within about 1/2 inch of the other. You can even mount one of them at a 90ยฐ angle to the other. As long as they are this distance apart, they will still function properly. We found this to be necessary on a door where we had adequate clearance at the door but not adequate clearance at the frame. Products easily integrate with IFTTT. We would appreciate if the temperature/humidity sensor had the ability to show more than an hour in the history graph in the app more often. But the graphics are clear, concise and easy to read. We will be testing more products shortly. We expand the system with additional door sensors and motion sensors, to which about 20 devices are connected. We will also test the garage door motion detector for the first time (ordered). Originally we wanted to test a combination of a motion sensor and a garage door opener, but none of our existing garage door openers proved to be compatible. After that, we check other devices in our "wish listโ€. We found no evidence of user data tracking, analytics tracking or communication with ad servers in the app. It seems like it's really just meant to do what it's supposed to do and nothing more. It's refreshing. In summary we can't find anything wrong. We tried to criticize something on devices or the app. Everything works as desired and we are very satisfied.

Pros
  • YoLink Hub Required but not included: The YoLink Hub is the only central controller for YoLink devices that connects YoLink devices to the internet and the cloud. Without the YoLink hub, this smart sensor will not work with the YoLink app and does not support 3rd party integrations with Alexa and IFTTT. The YoLink hub is not included. Please look for the hub by searching B07TQLKQLJ or try our 2 motion sensor kit with 1 hub from B087G5Q65X
Cons
  • Big and bulky
