Review on 45043 Precision Sport Shifter by Scott Morris

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Good build quality but major flaw

Short story: This derailleur does not come out of the box and will not match your transmission's shift pattern. The aluminum base plate is not processed correctly. Luckily I have a milling machine at work and was able to drill new holes and fix the problem. If you don't have that comfort level, most likely this layer won't work for you or you just won't like it because it's not in the center of the layer pattern. Your gearbox probably won't like it either. Long story: I wanted an inexpensive but "good" shifter, and B&M gets mostly good reviews. However, I did some research before buying and noticed that several people on the forums are having issues with the derailleur's springy center in 1/2 gear while it returns fine in 5/6 gear. Some people opt for super stiff springs and that "fixes" their problem. This is a PATCH fix only and does not fix the root cause of the problem. The main reason is that the screw pattern on the aluminum base plate is wrong by .135" according to my milling machine. that it doesn't bounce off the center 1/2, but bounces off the 5/6. You may also find that going straight to the 3rd and straight back to the 4th feels odd. This is because your shift rod is no longer centered as the B&M offset compensates for this. If you could look inside the transmission you would see that while the shifter is in the center, your shift rod is not, preferring 1/2 gear travel instead. Before I knew the root of the problem I even tried the extra centering springs and it still felt like junk. So I removed the bolts holding the derailleur. The strainer could now float and sit where the gear center would have it wanted to. Look out for exhibit A (my photo). I was amazed and all my problems made sense. I took it to work where we have a milling machine and moved ALL 4 mounting holes .135". Now it feels BIG and I was even able to fall back on weaker springs. That's the only reason I didn't give a star .because I have a great derailleur now but I gave it a low rating so people who don't have the comfort of a milling machine will be reading this. They're trying to shift from 3rd to 4th.That's because they have forced the install and I had the same problem as me with the switch preferring 1/2.This is serious because you can easily toggle this thing and destroy your valve train. Also note that the problem is not with my transmission .My shift cup in my transmission is the center line with a handle on the top cover. I removed the top cover and from the center line access holes to all 4 bolt locations and 100 geme ssen % confirms that B&M's aluminum mounting plate is indeed incorrectly manufactured. Everything was at 0.135"
