My 2012 Silverado with 5.3 liter engine and (6 speed) transmission has just clocked up 24,000 miles. I decided it was time to change the fluid and filter. In my experience, the first time was always the worst due to break-in contamination. Took the truck to (2) local repair shops and they said they wouldn't change the filter but they could evacuate my system with new oil. I gave up that option and decided to do it myself. I knew it was going to be a difficult change because it didn't seem like the pan would come loose due to the exhaust pipe adapter getting in the way. I checked the procedure on You-tube and indeed it did involve removing the pipes. I knew it was best not to try this, even from previous experiences with other rigs. But I had a plan! So I ordered a filter from Revain. It came after (2) days because I have Prime. What I could do was remove the bolts, tilt the sump forward, and drain as much liquid as possible. Oh this will make a mess but no more than usual, just take a large saucepan and some old disposable towels, a large square pan and a wad of paper towels will do. Then remove the (2) rear transmission mounting bolts (14)mm at the junction of the transmission and transfer case. You are inside the crossover frame. A recess is provided for access to the screws. Place a jack under the transmission where the lug hangs down at the lowest point. Raise the jack, you can only raise it about 2.5cm, and then raise the whole installation. You just have to lift the body. That inch is enough for the pan to drop far enough to do the rest of the job. You can't remove the pan completely, but you can remove the gasket and also remove the filter, just pull the filter straight down, pull it out of the hole provided, there is just enough space. . With the filter removed and the gasket removed and the pan still hanging there, you now need to get the other (2) Qts. oil in a pan. I used a small spoon from a detergent can or something similar for this. The pan is almost dry now, but you'll need to blot it with some paper towels to remove any residue and debris ie dirt and all. Pay attention to the area around the magnet at the bottom of the pan. There will be the largest deposit. Clean it thoroughly, make sure you don't leave paper towels behind. You don't want anything sucked into any passages. Wipe the mating surfaces of the oil pan and housing and check for cleanliness. Put the new filter back into the pan. The filter seal cannot be changed because there is not enough space. This is normal, they are made of rubber and can be used over the opening where the filter goes. Lubricate the end of the filter spout and insert it into the hole until it stops. Reinstall the seal. Check the alignment of the template, the gasket has (2) dowel pins to align and snap into the housing, check the bolt pattern again. You can reuse the pad. OE is made of steel gasket and rubber and is designed to be reused. Reinstall the flathead screws in a criss-cross pattern to 8 ft-lbs. It is better to use inch pounds tq. Wrench set at 96 in. lbs. Lower the jack and install the transfer case bolts. Torque up to 35 ft-lbs. Just tighten them. You can now refill liquid. 7 kW are required. Napa had it at $6 a quart. Make sure you have Dexron VI. Go ahead and add 6qts. Start the truck, let it idle for about 15 minutes, of course on a flat surface. While holding the brake, shift gears several times. Wait a few minutes while holding the brake and shift into gears a few more times. Check the level on the oil dipstick. You want the level at the top of the grid, that's the upper limit. Sometimes it is better to approach the level slowly, checking and filling several times. Or you mug when you didn't mean it. My truck took exactly 7 liters. generally. Check for leaks. Ready. I would say it doesn't need to be redone after 50-75k miles unless you pull a lot. As I said, in my experience, the first time is always the most important thing. Well you have a great filter, great liquid, liquid on your hands and hair, you used a roll of paper towels. Saved some money, enjoyed knowing the job was done right, and learned how to go about without having to pull exhaust pipes and how to deal with fools who don't want to change the filter.
