I used to have a pair of Selsi wide angle binoculars from the 80's when they were made in Japan. The best binoculars I've ever had, even compared to the old Zeiss 7x35 set. Somehow I lost them and had to replace them. Long story short, based on the help from the CloudyNights Astroforums, I decided to try the Bushnell Legacy binoculars first. I believe they were offset at the factory as the views were not very sharp and at night the out of focus stars showed the typical elongation characteristic of out of focus optics. Then other forum members advised me to try this Nikon Extreme Action 10x50. Big difference. The stars are clear, even the color is better. Looking at the coatings on both binoculars, Bushnell appears to have thicker, darker coatings. I thought the Nikon's lighter coatings would hurt the contrast, but that's not the case. Contrast is just as good, if not better than Bushnell's. Also, I can do one thing I can't with the Bushnells, which is use my glasses. The eye relief on these binoculars is just right for me. Not to say Bushnells are a bad choice. I believe if they had been properly adjusted at the factory they would have been much better. But just removing the eyes makes me tout the usefulness of Nikons over Bushnells despite being almost twice the price.
