Lower the tailgate and stay connected, but stretch the chains.
The 18 inch rod allowed me to lower the tailgate when connected to the van with an inch or two between the hatch and the electric jack. However, you will need to lengthen the safety chains and possibly disconnect the safety brake cable. I took a 5,000 pound foot chain from Home Depot and they cut it in half for me and used similarly rated snap links to make the extensions. Pictured is a 2013 F250 mated to a caravan.
