Sturdy smooth frame
After assembling, you should place it on a flat surface and use a triangle or something similar to check that the angles are set to true 90 degrees. The corners fit tightly together so you're close. I found it helpful to use a construction stapler to place a staple at the back of each corner to keep the frame square while you stretch the canvas.
