Yes, the pieces are small and there are quite a lot of "powdered" plant parts, but that's what every alfalfa hay looks like. Alfalfa doesn't grow in long strands, it's actually stems with leaves, so you end up with lots of small pieces, which are the dried leaves of the alfalfa plant. Overall, the material I received is very green and smells fresh. I've given it to a few rabbits when they're not eating and it tends to revitalize them and rekindle their interest in food. The box seems small, but the way it's packaged means you can pull it out handfuls over and over again, and the level inside the box never seems to change. I've fed a few handfuls of my rolls and the box looks as full as the day it arrived. I would buy it again.
