Not sure if I found a defective one but the paddle broke in half on my second outing. At full expansion, the aluminum tubes didn't appear to overlap, making them a very weak spot (which I only discovered after seeing the two pieces). If you just row with it, you might be fine. If you want to do something very reckless and aggressive, like push off a dock or push off a sandy beach to help launch a canoe, I'd go with something stronger.
