Poor performance, loud/sticky switch

I bought this microphone to use with language learning apps. Unfortunately it doesn't work very well. It's physically well made, with an attractive base, a fairly long braided cable, and a foam mic windscreen. His leg is both flexible and pivots at the base, allowing for more flexibility (ha!) in his positioning. The base has a conveniently located on/off switch. It's good. The bad thing is that she's deaf as a pillar. It's so insensitive that even with my PC's mic gain set to 100 and I hold the mic so close my lips are almost touching the windshield, the recordings are still barely audible. At this level of gain, turning the mic on and off with the switch at the base creates a loud CLICK in the speakers that almost feels like a pop, and feedback is a constant hazard. When I recorded speech samples with the Audacity audio processing app and then told Audacity to boost the resulting sample to full range, Audacity had to apply 30dB of boost to get the "normal" full signal level. That means he had to amplify the signal THOUSAND TIMES. (Every 10dB is a 10x loudness factor when it comes to loudness. 30dB is the difference between the sound of an electric toothbrush and the sound of a subway train, or between the sound of a washing machine running and a helicopter hovering nearby .) The on-off switch tends to get stuck in the ON position. This happened to me several times over the course of about half a day trying to get a usable signal from this mic. NO. NO. NO. Two tech thugs made this mic DOWN. I bought it to learn languages, not to practice my prime drill voice. I'd have to yell at it with all my might to extract any useful notes from it.

Pros
  • Omnidirectional condenser microphone with clear voice. On/off switch is handy for controlling the microphone
Cons
  • So-so
