The relay ensures you don't have insufficient voltage problems associated with the Ignitor II electronic ignition in an old Chevy -Motor goes and it bypasses the original wiring so the voltage stays high and the motor keeps running much better than the original points and the capacitor in the distributor that it's day and night. There are ways to do this without using a relay, but you'll have to run the wire from the back of the fuse box or try breaking the connection.
