Review on Samsung U32D970Q Professional Monitor - 3840x2160p, 55Hz, UHD by Matthew Singh

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Simply wonderful!: my review

I bought this monitor so I can see my digital work at the same size and color calibration as when it was printed and now I can see everything so clearly. It looks better than my iPad 4 that I draw on. I'm looking at an 8 megapixel photo taken with my iPhone 6 and when I zoom in I see fine details that you would never see on a lower resolution monitor. The image on screen is sharp, crisp and colors are factory calibrated to match my X-Rite I1 color calibrator. A word of caution if you're considering buying this monitor: it's BIG. Dimensions out of the box are approximately 28 3/8" x 16.5". I set it at about 40 inches from my eyes in portrait mode and still have to lift my eyes a bit to see the top. Don't plan on sitting closer than about 30 inches from the screen and plan on taking up a lot of desk space. My desk is 72" x 40" and I think this monitor and my 27" monitor will fit. One more reminder, plan on using DisplayPort cables to connect. HDMI only delivers 30 fps and DisplayPort 60 The screen is so big that you need a higher refresh rate Make sure your graphics card has a DisplayPort 1.2 connector and at least 4GB of RAM Also make sure your power supply supports a high-end graphics card. I didn't have that and had to order a new PSU to provide enough wattage to power the MSI GeForce GTX 970 that I bought with the monitor.I'm seriously considering giving up my 27" HD monitor and to only use the UD970 from now on because there is no comparison when they are side by side.I will update my review after playing a few games with it.UPDATED 10/14/14: I'm to Windows 7 too returned because Windows 8.1 scaling is not working properly. Chrome looked terrible. Moving the window between 1980x1200 and UD970 required resizing because the image was too large on the smaller monitor. Windows 8.1 tries to automatically set the DPI for each monitor and it just doesn't work. On Windows 7 the text is set to 160% and that works for me. Everything is crisp, clear and easy to read. If you have no choice but to use Windows 8.1, I recommend only using UHD monitors with a similar DPI. Apparently, application support for multiple monitors with different DPI values is still in its early stages. Updated 2/9/16: Windows 10 fixed all DPI issues. It allows for different DPI settings for each monitor and I currently have U32 set to 150% which makes the menu text about 3/16" tall and the monitor is about 32" from my face. I find it comfortable. Viewing distance because the monitor is very large If you need to connect to other computers remotely, Windows 10 and Windows 2012 Server on the remote computer will automatically adopt the DPI settings when using Windows 10 on the client side. 4 runs on "best settings" at 3480x2160 with an nVidia Geforce GTX 970 1GB with no problems. XCOM 2 also runs at 2560x1440 with max settings. Pay for other 32-inch monitors if your sole purpose is gaming. As the name suggests, this is a monitor for professional artists and photographers who need proper color calibration and the ability to match the monitor to the printers they use. Being able to see an accurate representation of what an image will look like once printed has clear benefits. I now draw on an iPad Pro with canvases between 40 and 64 megapixels. This is the only monitor out of eight that I have that can be calibrated to match the iPad and the Giclée printer I use to keep everything stable. That's why I bought it, although I also use it as my everyday all-in-one monitor. My only regret is that I didn't wait for the price to come down.
