Can't tell how they work as belts for football pants but I use them for a plant press (for drying leaves and flowers for decorative purposes) and herbs Rack (used to dry herbs/flowers for culinary purposes). I use two of each to hold the layers together. They work really well - the D ring is secure and the ring itself is solid. The straps are tight and don't slip off; I can lift a fully loaded bench or rack by the straps and not worry about the straps coming loose. For my use they are perfect.
