18 MONTH UPDATE: This unit continues to accompany me (in a small, zipped hard case) and still works with no issues. This is the only device I've found with all the ports I need including SD, VGA and HDMI. The five star rating has been updated. UPDATE: I had a data throughput issue which the seller responded to quickly. They documented a similar test that showed no issues and suggested plugging a Sandisk SSD into a (more powerful) BC USB3 port. I did this but tried again, performance is great (see photo). So who knows what's going on - my Mac has restarted many times and maybe an app was causing the problem. So I'm happy to give this review five stars for the manufacturer's responsive support and willingness to work with me as a customer. The product continues to perform well on my first international trip with it and it's great to have all the ports you need in one compact USB 3.1 accessory. Initial Five Star Rating: This is a good companion for my awesome new MacBook Pro. So far I've used it to run a super slim Migration Assistant to migrate my entire previous MacBook Pro to a new computer over Ethernet. It worked flawlessly and the speed exceeded my expectations for gigabit ethernet, completing the entire terabyte process error-free in about three hours. No driver download required. The USB 3 ports work well with the USB 3 and USB 2 peripherals I've tried so far. They also work well when transferred to a Windows virtual machine. I haven't tried the HDMI and VGA ports yet, which is surprising as those were the first things I looked for when purchasing this product. After all, I'd be surprised if they didn't work perfectly either. Pros: Functional and fast. Everything you could need in a cute, briefcase-compatible USB-C powered dongle that won't embarrass your gorgeous Mac. Many ports. Ideal for those on the go who need fast Ethernet access, legacy USB 3 and 2 connectivity, and display compatibility with HDMI and VGA projectors and monitors. A nice little thing to take away instead of many. Much cheaper than the multi-key approach! For my purchase, I chose the Space Gray option, which has a nice metallic finish, like Apple's Space Gray, but with a touch of pink that gives it a bit of uniqueness while complementing the beautiful design of the Mac. Don't worry, "pink" isn't feminine at all. Cons: The USB-C cable is not replaceable and will inevitably wear out and break over time. Let's see if that happens during the warranty period. The whole element can be a bit large - almost the size of the trackpad on my new laptop. But that means the ports are well separated and easy to manage. There is no Thunderbolt 3 port, but that may not be a limitation as all Mac laptops have more than one and this may replace multiple separate dongles using the ports. The USB-C power port works flawlessly, so you don't just have to use the port on your Mac for charging. It's still too early for me to own it, so I'll update this review if anything happens to it. But so far so good. Happy shopping so far.
