Review on πŸ”§ GEARWRENCH 5 Piece GearBox 12 Point XL Double Box Metric Ratcheting Wrench Set - 85987 by Chris Smotherman

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Overall ok - Hand tools

I have metric and SAE sets in regular and extended sizes. I'm trying really hard to like these wrenches, but in general I might be too snobby to love them. I'll state the pros and cons (this applies to all Gearwrench (GW) long double ring wrench sets): PROS: 1) Reasonable price 2) Good chrome and finish 3) Good bracket (fits perfectly in toolbox drawers) 4) B In general, seems OKCONS to work: 1) The keys just aren't thick or strong enough. They bend and flex everywhere (especially the smaller sizes under 17mm) and that can be really annoying when you appreciate your body parts. 2) The fit isn't the best. This GW series has more play at the fixed cap than any of the cap ends on my other 12 point wrenches (I have in addition to GW Proto, SK, Heyco, Wright, Dewalt and Wera).3) I have a very hard believe that these keys are properly forged or made of quality steel. I have some pretty good sets of buttons and they all ring on impact except for these double box GWs. While not scientific, the ringing seems to be a sign that the part is tough and has been properly heat treated. Interestingly, these GWs are either made by some other method (like casting, sintering, etc.) or just plain crappy mild steel (maybe that's why they bend so much). These dual boxes simply "ring" when you bang them against another metal surface. They don't ring, which to me is a sign that GW skimped on those keys. I have other regular GW combo keys that "ring" when pressed. So it's really just a complaint about these double box sets, not the entire GW line. 4) 2 sets of bent keys returned from the box. Bad quality control. But I've had this problem with "premium" brands too. If GW had made them with a thicker shank and better tolerance on the fixed end of the ratchetless box it would have made a really great wrench set. Just like 3 stars. I want snap-on sets with long zero degree double box wrenches with no ratchet.
