.497 pneumatic hammers are much better than standard sized hammers. However, the choice of bits is minimal and they are expensive. I have used this adapter with a Mayhews long chisel and it worked well with no signs of wear or cracking. I've done a normalizing heat treatment and always used an anti-seize agent.

Works very well. They allow the use of .401 chisels/punches in larger .498 caliber tools. Other reviewers commented that they are too hard and could break as a result. I did as they mentioned and normalized them by heating them to red and then slowly letting them cool. I haven't had a single problem with them yet. Should the manufacturer simply supply them in this form?

After reading all the reviews on this product, one thing became clear. Sam S.'s review hit me in the head. This adapter was too rigid, to the point of brittleness! I took his advice and reduced the hardness slightly by heating it to a cherry red color for about 15 seconds and letting it cool to room temperature. I banged this adapter mercilessly with my CP717 air hammer for at least 1/2 hour with no problems and have used it many times since. I don't see any signs of it being damaged or…
