This kit does the job

Bought an apartment with an AO Smith water heater when the inspector turned on the hot water the smell of eggs was evident and said it could probably just be a new anode rod. I watched a few videos before realizing I could do it myself as I had no experience. I had to downsize. I was glad the old one was so rusted/disintegrated as I had limited clearance to get it out and now I know next time there will be no problem with this version. Since it came with a hex tool it made it a lot easier.

Encountered broken rods twice. Broken wires in cable

Ordered segmented anode rod due to height restriction above water heater. The anode arrived quickly and with a matching 27mm head. However, the steel cable running through all 4 segments had half of the strands broken between the top and second segments. If this wire rusts and fails, the bottom 3 sections will fall into the water heater forever. I ordered a second one and it had the same defect. It seems to me that the pole is complicated for packaging/shipping reasons and the bend radius is…

Stainless steel cable Not exactly

The anode protector was easy to install, the only problem might be the difficulty in removing the old one. The old one was 80% worn, so the replacement was justified. The product image states that the cable's center core is made of "flexible 316 stainless steel, it will never rust, break or corrode". See attached picture, there was a light layer of oxidation on the core. cable, so I attached a magnet to the cable to check if it really was stainless steel. I wasn't expecting it to stick…

27mm should be approximately 1 1/16 feet

The hex head that came with the anode was 27mm not 1 1/16". It fit a bit loose and managed to detach the existing anode, no damage. I don't know what would happen if the existing anode was really hard to remove with a 27mm socket. I've had an electric kettle for a little less than 13 years. When I tried to remove the old anode most of the anode material was still intact - wow. It only rose 1-2 inches before the encrusted metal caught on the edge of the hole. Instead of wasting time breaking off

As expected for rough plumbing

Shaft arrived as expected. An attempt to replace the old rod proved impossible. I used the included outlet and borrowed (free) a 3 foot extension cord from my local auto parts store. I tried and tried but it didn't move, I added some wd-40 and tried again later that day - no. I added a liquid key and tried again - no. I added more and the next day I tried several times - No Go. This instantaneous water heater (WH) is not 5 years old, they should actually be that tight. I drained and rinsed the…

It works wonders!

I decided to share this with you all. I live on a farm. Since I moved here in 2017, my well water smells like rotten eggs from the sulfur. tests, right? I've also called several companies to get an estimate for a new well and/or cistern. Nothing has worked so far... If your water smells like rotten eggs, do it! Replace the magnesium anode rod in the water heater with an aluminum/iron rod. I'm telling you, it's not the easiest task, but it has changed the world! When magnesium and sulfur…

Extend the Life of Your Water Heater

I came across an ad on Facebook that said you could extend the life of your water heater. As a service technician, I read ads and watched several videos that suggested that replacing the sacrificial anode in a water heater could extend the life of the water heater. The anode in our water heater was about 15 years old and was never changed. I've already experienced corrosion and arcing with one of the heating elements, I had to replace it a few years ago and decided I should replace the…
