Ideal for small projects

I didn't want to burn my desk with my little soldering project, so I got this. It took a few days but everything arrived in perfect condition. It copes well with the fire of the torch and helps finish the work on time. If I had a choice I would make it thinner and make it take up more real estate. but then I think it will break. Maybe for a bigger project I would have invested in a bigger block, but for any little things (bracelets, earrings) this is ideal.

Pros
  • The non-asbestos refractory is fibrous and therefore soft enough to attach objects to the surface for perfect soldering.
Cons
  • Out of fashion

Small but easy to solder

This block is small and thinner, but very useful! 3 or 4 stars. It's not the typical "brick" size we use in metalsmithing classes, and the texture isn't as strong/sturdy. My stone arrived intact and was well wrapped in bubble wrap to protect it. Pins are good for securing your work and are easy to clean by rubbing cement flat. I cut grooves in some with my big files to allow air to circulate. Just check the measurements to make sure it's the right size for you. ** I bought this when the price…

Pros
  • Suitable for filigree work as the surface remains smooth.
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks

Large Parts Holder and Heatsink

I get on with these things pretty quickly because they're brittle, fall apart and melt after repeated use. However, they perform a function that no other soldering pads can perform: they allow the raised parts to be built into the block so that it is held and these parts (wires, pins, faceplates) are protected from the heat of the torch. And since you can insert at different depths, you can also control the position of the attachment point and make contact better than with a third hand. Ideal…
