Brother SX 4000 Electronic Typewriter Review

Unfortunately I could not send in this Brother SX-4000 typewriter for exchange or repair due to health reasons. I ordered this machine to keep on the first floor of the house. I have the same Brother SX-4000 typewriter on the 2nd floor of my computer lab that I have had for years and it works well.

Five stars because the product received was exactly as described. Plus, it arrived undamaged within the promised delivery window. despite unprofessional packaging and an ice storm in Texas. I used a typewriter for drafts. The best feature is the ability to type the entire line before printing. It might seem silly given today's technology, but the reassurance it offers for original works is worth it.

Works great. The keycaps are quite yellowed, but considering when this thing was made... My only gripe is that the little metal guide that holds the paper to the roll has been poorly repaired. For example... it came loose from the one piece of what looked like gorilla glue holding it together and I had to fix it myself. It's okay, I can fix something, but maybe the repair people will get wind of it: Use better glue; Anything used here doesn't bond well to metal.

So you think you don't need a typewriter. I've used this so many times since I got it. Yes, you can remove the paper from the copier tray and load envelopes, enter the address on the computer and send it to the printer, and then load the paper back into the copier. OR you can put an envelope in this typewriter and print the envelope and you're done. I bought this to replace my old IBM Selectric that finally gave up. Even though we have multiple computers at home, we still need something to fill out the forms and work with the index cards we've used for recipes for years. Brother completes the bill. It takes time to get used to its conventions, some of which are illogical. For example, tabs can only be set when the caret is on the far left. But after a while you get used to its features and it does its job perfectly. The price is right too.
