This item is so amazing I had to buy a second one! Just plug it in outdoors and make sure the photo sensor is pointing in a direction where it can receive light (don't keep it covered). I bought 2 of these for our outdoor Christmas lights last year. Last year we used them for 3 weeks. They worked well for the first 2 weeks and then after a snow storm we noticed the lights wouldn't come on at night unless we unplugged the unit and restarted it each morning.
