I think most people install this in an existing hole and others drill a hole in thin wood. However, I set it up on a workbench with 3/4" wood for drilling. The hole was easy enough with a 1.5" hole saw. However, the socket is 1.58 inches at its widest point. Now if you have a 40mm hole saw, which is 1.5748 inches, you shouldn't have a problem. Very good product, not many of them. Installation went smoothly and overall I am very happy with the quality, range and performance of this unit. I bought two to mount on my wooden table to connect laptops, chargers or other items that need power. I didn't need two USB ports, but now that I have them, I've used them on both phones and desks.
