Not ready for regular use.

In the first week of use, the lining under the document cover came loose and started falling out every time the cover was opened. The included software is suitable, but not for home use. No printed documentation other than the installation poster. It's probably serviceable, but not for a scan novice, and the questionable quality control evidenced by the self-removing document cover speaks for itself.

Exceptional Value

I have been using this scanner for over a year and have scanned hundreds of typewritten pages, old slides and photos. For the money this is a great tool. We have a newer and much more expensive scanner in the office, but I often take work home to scan because the Epson 1670 does the job better. The only thing I complain about is the lack of clear instructions for use. Once I figured out how to operate the machine through trial and error, I fell in love with it because of its speed.

Fairly happy with the office electronics

After reading countless reviews from Epson and others I bought the 1670 scanner but made sure to download the latest driver (for Windows XP) before doing so I even started the installation. So everything went very smoothly and I started scanning almost immediately. It's true that the interactive instructions aren't the best, but a little learning time will clear most things up. Some fifty-year-old color slides could easily be scanned and made at high magnification for e-mailing or printing…

One quick! Scanner suitable for flatbed and photo scanners

Let me start with a disclaimer: all I want from a scanner is to quickly scan greyscale black and white materials in the office. I bought/tested a few supposedly fast scanners and was disappointed (Canon bought thinks 45 seconds and then scans!) Well, Epson delivers 200 dpi scans, I can do partial pages in 5-6 seconds. and full pages in 12 seconds (from pressing the scan button to the end). You can bypass the preview mode and send scans directly to a program or file. The software has good points

Scanner is perfect in combination with Vuescan software

This is one of the best scanners I have ever used. The color is good, but most importantly, this scanner is FAST. It gets the job done faster than most scanners that are 4 years older. Combined with the aftermarket software Vuescan ([.]), I can create multi-page PDFs with a single click and automate my color-calibrated workflow. Most of the reviews here focus on a poor driver/software interface - to be honest I've never found decent scanner software in the box. Short hardware development cycles

Good scanner for home use

First I got an Epson 3170 which kept freezing on my eMac. There was a driver issue that Epson didn't list on its download site. I picked it up and bought the 1670 from the Apple Store. It's not as good as the 3170, but it doesn't crash, and Epson has updated the Mac drivers since the 3170 returned. I have hundreds of slides I want to burn to CD and the 1670 can do 2 at a time. time, compared to 3170, which is 4. It may take me until the end of the next life, so I'll try to show slides on the…

Good value for home use

Working on a budget I was looking for something that could be used to scan photos, negatives and slides that approached amateur quality. When scanning photos, I was impressed with the speed and the quality was average or slightly better than average. When scanning slides I found that if you have an image with a lot of black or very dark space the scanner/software gets confused and it took several attempts to get it. Correctly; sometimes it didn't work at all. The rest of the slide scan was…

Unhappy with scanning slides

In the interest of full disclosure I was only interested in using the scanner to scan family slides and returned the scanner a week later. On the plus side, installation in Windows XP was a breeze. Epson includes a high-speed USB 2.0 cable, which was a nice touch since most companies cut corners here. I was also intrigued by the "retouch old faded photos" software. I've had a lot of experience with Epson scanners in the past: I've found that Epson scanners have historically been some of the…
