The sensitivity needs to be worked on.

I am using this to help my son figure out the wiring in his new, well, OLD house they just bought. For some reason, sometimes 1970s wiring isn't quite what you'd expect. How have electrical codes changed, huh? Anyway, we got this unit and went in search of circuit breakers. It takes quite a while to adjust the sensitivity to determine the actual switch, not four or five. We found the transmitter part very useful and found that many of the original circuits were missing the ground wire. So weโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Variable sensitivity setting to locate the correct circuit breaker
Cons
  • Vulgarity

Great Product - Tester

This product is great for locating switches or testing outlets. I have used the outlet tester on multiple outlets and lighting cords and it has worked well. (I tested wiring the fixture to a screw-in bulb base with sockets.) The key to using the breaker locator properly is using a manual sensitivity control. I read the manual, but practiced it on outlets and their corresponding switches, which I've already labeled. After a few minutes, when I felt like I had the hang of it, I used it to findโ€ฆ

Already Paid

This deserves 5 stars for me. This device has already paid for itself plus something. I don't understand the "trash" reviews about this. I've always been afraid to mess around with anything electrical, but the house I bought has a switch box with about 40 switches. The previous owners did not specifically label each circuit breaker. I put the unit in the basement and found that the sockets behind and next to the refrigerator, the fan and the light bulb in the hood do not work. Other outletsโ€ฆ

Pros
  • GFCI Transmitter: GFCI Circuit Tests | LED display of 2 test conditions and 5 wiring errors | tests reverse/open connections | Indicators show circuit status
Cons
  • Useless features

Excellent - and manual sensitivity adjustment is what you need.

Works great. There were others that calibrated themselves automatically, but the process looked tedious. And my experience with spike finders that calibrate automatically made me crave the old spike finders that had a sensitivity knob like this. I increase the sensitivity and track the area vaguely. I lower the sensitivity as I get narrower. Finally, when I have a candidate, I turn the sensitivity on until it just turns off, then check everywhere to see if it turns back on. Then just increaseโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Transmitter and receiver snap together for easy storage
Cons
  • Does not fit all

The manual sensitivity setting puts me in control. Which is better (IMO)

With a sensitivity adjustment knob, I can have peace of mind when using this CB viewfinder. I was able to map my whole house which sockets are on which CB. It's all about technology here. I plug the transmitter into an outlet, lower my head to my panel, then touch the switches at maximum sensitivity and move the receiver up and down the switches (as instructed). It usually starts beeping as soon as I put it on the panel. So I decrease it with a touch and then keep dialing it until only theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Bundled with a receiver, a GFCI transmitter and a 9V battery for the receiver
Cons
  • Not bad
