Good Refractometer: Refractometer

This device has worked well for me for four years. I now rely on Brix readings rather than the hydrometer which is temperature dependent and requires a lot more wine, cider etc. As for testing grapes for sugar content, it pretty much matches what my taste test tells me. .

Pros
  • Delivery was very fast
Cons
  • Crumpled

For money! on Substance Analysis Instrumentation

I purchased this item 5-6 years ago. I use it once a year at harvest to take test samples from machine harvested grapes and it is accurate to within 0.1 Brix on each batch tested. Bringing a crop to market that requires certain sugar standards is a very valuable tool that more than pays for itself after one season. Yes, I would highly recommend this product, it is extremely accurate compared to more expensive commercial digital refractometers.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions

Why two Brix scales? Why not create a specific gravity scale?

I was expecting this device to actually measure specific gravity but it has two scales both in Brix. However, it was comparable to my hydrometer when ingesting OG and FG beers. But this is useless to just take FG and calculate ABV. Use the numbers OG, FG and calculate them. When it came out of the box it showed 0 of my room temperature tap water which was a good starting point for me but this can be adjusted. Supplied with a durable plastic case, a screwdriver to set the device, a non-scratch…

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
