It's NOT tight

At first, pickled foods (picked beets, sauerkraut) that I cooked with these airlocks came out well. But after a while using those airlocks I kept getting thick layers of fungus in the jars. The fungus grows in the presence of oxygen, which means the locks let in air from the outside. For some reason these gateways no longer remain airtight after multiple uses. What is the whole point of this product. It's useless if it doesn't remain airtight.

Trying for my kvass

I have never brewed or fermented anything liquid. I'm a cheese maker and I understand fermentation. Recently I tried kvass and, oddly enough, I liked it. So I looked for recipes on how to make it. My first batch was a failure - no fermentation. So I tried again with a different recipe. I also tried to find some gateways to use. They had good reviews and wouldn't break the bank. They were pretty easy to assemble and use. The cleaning isn't that bad. A day after the kvass was poured into jars, it

Updated Review - Good Customer Service

December 27, 2019 I have updated my review on this product due to the great customer service I received in response to my first review. Gilmo sent me a replacement set. I just have to use a method other than boiling to sterilize the gateways before using them. ********************************** ************** ** ******** Initial Rating: Useless, useless Like all my fermentation equipment, I boiled out locks, lids and gaskets in water. . Cheap plastic airlocks have melted down and become…

Very good fermentation kit

I'm so glad I bought them. You are perfect. The lids have a rubber ring/gasket at the bottom to keep things sealed, the grommets fit perfectly and they even include four extra grommets. I am very happy with the purchase. I am currently fermenting four containers with these lids and airlocks and they work great. You could do it yourself a bit cheaper, but you have to find everything and do the work. I don't even know where to find seals under the lid. Whatever they use to poke holes in their…

Helpful, but you have to be selective.

Background: I have been making sauerkraut, pickled cucumbers for more than 20 years. Background in metal chemistry. These fermentation lids seal fairly well, the jar's silicone gasket and airlock boot work and seal well. Airlocks are similar to many of the three-piece designs sold by homebrew suppliers and, despite previous reviews, were never intended or intended to be sterilized in boiling water (common cleaning supplies include brewery detergent and disinfectant), and the instructions…

Lids can leak if they're too tight, good if you're on a budget.

I had high hopes for these fermentation lids. I bought and compared this and another more expensive brand. The more expensive brand is plastic, and the sleeve on the lid is about twice as thick as this one. When I assembled this thing, the grommet popped out. Therefore, you must hold it with both hands on either side to securely place the sealed fermenter funnel in the sleeve. About 6 hours into the fermentation I noticed liquid at the bottom on the outside of the jar. The lid didn't seal even…
