Let's get back to the soft rumble.

After years of continuous use, my Fluval 404s started clicking. I knew it was wear between the shaft and impeller, but I didn't know which of them was to blame. Now I can say if I had to do it again I would just buy a balance bike. Ceramic rods are so hard that they practically do not wear out. Still, it's nice to have spares for emergencies. All of these parts are Fluval brand replacement parts and are significantly cheaper as a set than buying them individually.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • No power

Exactly what was needed, easy installation

I probably didn't have to replace all the parts in this set and was able to save money. The plastic protrusions on my lid collapsed, the impeller was pretty much chewed up, and the cap from the ceramic rod disappeared. From time to time it is recommended to replace the canister seal. So I just bought a kit and swapped them all out. The pump seems to have more power again and runs as quietly and pleasantly as before. New life for a 10 year old Fluval filter! Hope it lasts for many more years.

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Disappears

Cheaper than the new filter

My Fluval 405 filter was a miracle when I first got it. He cleaned my turtle tank and made it sparkle. After a couple of years he stopped working completely - oh he started but the tank wasn't cleaned. I really didn't want to spend more than $100 to replace it and then I stumbled across this little gem. The instruction manual doesn't make it very clear how to use these parts, but with careful thought I was able to put all the parts together. Run the filter and voila! My beautiful filtering wasโ€ฆ

Did not fit. Waste of time, money and Fluval 404.

This was a waste of money and time on my 404. I had to replace the inner cover and impeller. Nothing fit on my 404, even though all the parts were labeled 404. The impeller is too big. Wrong diameter ceramic rod. Impeller, shaft size, magnet diameter, impeller fins, sleeve size were wrong. I drilled the new cover's bushing to fit the old impeller to try and reuse it, but no wonder it was noisy. Here are some photos of the original and this kit as I threw my old $100,404 pair and this $50 repair

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Some errors

Rattle Fixed on Fluval 405

Summary: This upgrade kit fixed a rattle/pop that was getting slower and louder over the last year! Details: I had a Fluval 405 canister filter for 7 or 8 years. It was plugged in and working almost all the time. Thus, the ceramic shaft and impeller show normal wear. As the impeller wears relative to the shaft, the diameter of the shaft is now smaller (thinner), which allows the impeller to "bounce" a little more when spinning than it should. The extra movement turns into an annoyingโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Hands Free
Cons
  • Very Expensive
