Not useful for finding ceiling joists

I bought this thing specifically to find ceiling joists to securely fasten the joist over the ridge of the cathedral ceiling. The roof/ceiling is framed with trusses on about 24" centers, and I know where they are, but I didn't want to poke a bunch of holes to find each one. No luck with this thing - it's no better than my circa 1980 Sears Craftsman. What actually worked was using a stack of neodymium magnets to find drywall screws and then drilling holes to mark the position of something solid

Contradictory statements.

Unfortunately, I have to rate this Dornfinder poorly. I have a simple new construction of 3/4 inch single layer drywall with wood studs. The nail finder appears to detect air ducts, but a nail next to it appears and then immediately disappears. I've tried cycling it up and down, side to side, and turning it on before and after hanging it on the wall. The only consistency was inconsistent readings. I contacted their tech support and after troubleshooting with them they said it sounded like a bad

Pros
  • Great for a small home

Doesn't live up to the hype. The contractor fails.

They do not correspond to the advertisement. Maybe it's good for the person who found the carnation to hang the picture. Unfortunately, readings will be wrong if there are other objects behind the drywall, be they wires, pipes, or even insulation, or the lights are simply blinking like a UFO. I work as an electrical contractor and where I need it most accurately and reliably is next to existing sockets, switches and bolts in the immediate vicinity, these are exactly the places where it isn't…

Last one you bought

Let me start by saying that I'm an engineer so I like to make things complicated but I'm also very picky about products. If it doesn't work, it returns. Over the years I've probably gone through three or four breeding animal finders. It started with magnetic ones in the 90's and they were good for the time, but the problem with magnetic rod finders, which basically locate the drywall screw, is that you rely on the drywall hanger to find the center of the rod. This isn't the best person to rely…

Pros
  • One year trial
Cons
  • Definitely bad product

Not as good as advertised but best I've found so far

Used it in critical conditions on 80 year old plaster walls where it's clearly NOT guaranteed by the manufacturer and it worked better than expected. This arrangement allowed me to use long screws for bolt attachment without costly or complicated anchors and minimized the risk of ripping old plaster as only a small hole was required at each shackle position. However, when used on 1/2" drywall where it should be flawless, it gives inconsistent results. However, it's as good as anything I've…

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Some imperfections
