Fantastic drill

I bought this Forstner drill to install Schlage single sided latches in an existing door. I needed to drill a 1.5" diameter, 1.25" deep hole with a flat bottom, so a hole saw would take a lot of work. I did a little research and Freud had the best reputation and the serrated edge bit takes less pressure and generates less heat so I chose it to work with. This Freud drill worked great, perfectly clean on the sides and bottom of the hole. I was concerned I would have to use it in a hand drill and

Total cost good for the Forstner bit

First something about me. On the weekends I work as a carpenter, mainly in crafts and art, as well as house renovations. For 40 years I was fed up with an electric drill and ordinary bits and sometimes a spring crown for larger diameter holes. Then I ventured into a DIY project where I wanted really smooth, precise holes (hence the purchase of a drill press, don't tell your wife). To make holes I bought a cheap set of Forstner bits. You saw them here on Amazon, seven bits for $12. What can goโ€ฆ

Bad to the Bone is the best among power tools and hand tools

Freud Precision Serrated Drill Bit, 1-1/2" 3/8" Shank (PB-011). Project: Drill an inch and a half diameter hole through a 5 inch thick piece of Brazilian Ebony (For reference: Oak has a 1290 Janka Hardness, this ebony has a 3690 Janka Hardness, making it three times harder as oak). I burned a brand new Forstner bit from a big store and only gotten 1/16" deep. This Freudian drill bit cut through this ebony like a hot knife through butter. 8 is off center so I threw that piece away and startedโ€ฆ
