UPDATE: ordered replacement, still bad. I tested it first and there was over 8ppm ammonia. So I ordered the 3rd bottle hoping the 3rd time would be a charm. And nothing. The reason I gave this product 2 stars is because Seachem has good products overall and buying the same product in smaller bottles was fine, but the gallon jar smelled like rotten eggs! I sent back the first bottle I had and the second bottle smelled the same which meant the bacteria had died. As the bacteria die, the smell just stays there and builds up until you finally open it. I have to say if a product does NOT arrive dead it works! When you first open a bottle it does NOT smell, I repeat, NOT of sulfur or give off a strong odor. If so, it's more than likely the bacteria in it are DEAD. I bought the same item from my LFS (local fish shop) and when I opened the bottle there was no bad or strong odor coming off.
