    Not square and wrong sizes

    I've been using it for a year and I've had problems with the contrast in my work. I finally checked the squareness of it and it's WAY wrong; about 1/16 inch larger than 24 inch. Then I checked the measurements, they are also wrong. Manage this thing. Too bad I didn't check it sooner.

    It's from Starrett, what more could you ask for?

    Sturdy and accurate. Only one thing to criticize: Their headquarters are in the state of Massachusetts, in a town called ATHOL. I was told that former Massachusetts Governor Endicott Peabody named four cities after him: Endicott, Peabody, Marblehead, and Athol. However, they stand above that name and produce great things.

    Square inner edges, no outer edges.

    Inside edges are perfectly straight, outside edges are not. It's ok for rough work, but when it comes to precision I can only rely on the inside edge. I'm not sure if it changes from square to square. Too bad, Starrett products are usually great. I keep it because I will mainly use the inside edge anyway and the price is good.

    Not Square: Carpenter's Square

    later This square is offset by about 1/32 inch on the short side. It also has a thick plastic coating, presumably to prevent rust, which is cheap, ugly and very difficult to remove. I understand this square is for construction work, but making a square square should be as easy as making it non-square. Why not make it square at all. I also understand that the finish is meant to be low maintenance but it is lumpy around the edges and when I removed the finish from the edges to make them smooth…

    3/16th of the square in measure and layout tools

    I spent extra money to get a framing square from a reputable company. However, when I used it today to level a 4 x 2 x 2 foot box during assembly, I later found that the bottom of the box would not fit in the tabs. I figured that maybe the sides and ends of the box were pulled out of square during the gluing and fastening process, but I ended up finding that the Starrett square was 3/16 inch smaller. What a pain to take it apart and then put it back together again! Luckily I used Titebond III…

    Very unusual - measuring and marking tools

    Nice looking and strong, either covered with varnish or some other transparent coating. I knew the embossed measurement scale would be difficult to read in certain lighting conditions, so that wasn't a problem. However, the angle of the square was noticeable and affected the perpendicularity of the instrument. The coating was so rough it was impossible to draw a good thin straight line with it. Overall, I've been using Starrett tools for more years than I can remember and still own micrometers…

    Starrett Framing Square FS-24

    ASIN: B002BWKO3S This square does not show the quality I expect from Starrett tools. The square was not square when it arrived. It's relatively easy to perfect this type of square, but you don't have to use the Starrett tool to do it. In case you don't know this process, it is done by forging (hitting it with a bullet or similar hammer). When the square is sharp (less than 90 degrees), hit the inside of the corner. If blunt, hit outside. This will stretch the metal in the desired direction…
