Replaced the valve cover gasket and bought it just in case. The mechanic told me that the old PCV breather valve was shot through when he took it out. He said that you can usually hear a rumble from the ball bearing inside, but mine didn't rattle so it was stuck. It costs a few bucks to change that little detail when I was doing other work.
