Works for high precision NTP clock source

With a little self-wiring, this GPS can send a PPS signal through the DCD pin of the RS-232 serial port and provide an accurate time to NTP runs on Linux or BSD. Currently, this offers PPS blocking in less than a millisecond, and the GPS is on the top floor of a multi-story building. Great fun/hobby block at a great price.

Pros
  • Raw measurement output for complex client applications
Cons
  • Minor issues

Use for NTP Server Time Source

This device was purchased for use as a GPS enabled NTP Network Time Server. A DB9 serial port has been added to the end of the cable that connects to a Debian based NTP server and I am running a first level NTP server for my LAN. This device worked 24/7/365 with no issues. It is strongly recommended that the output time is 1 pulse per second.

Pros
  • High Sensitivity WAAS Enabled GPS Receiver
Cons
  • Very Expensive

Great for GPS NTP with own source.

Closes securely out of window but is weatherproof for outdoor installation. A good choice for home-made GPS-synchronized NTP (Network Time Protocol) clocks on a budget. Just find a suitable spot to mount it, preferably on a small outdoor mount. Run a cable around your house, solder a DB9 serial connector, set it up and connect it to the server. The LVC model, unlike other 18x versions, provides a pulse-per-second signal for accurate time. An 18x LVC is included and that's it - you'll need to…

Pros
  • Best in class

Excellent Time Source PPS

The Garmin 18x LVC is an OEM wireless GPS device with a Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) per second aligned meter pulse output with a maximum error of 1.0 microseconds (1.0 ppm seconds ). ) Only the LVC type supplies a measuring pulse signal (pulses per second). As a retail item, this device is primarily used for very accurate timekeeping. In theory it could be used for navigation, but bare pins require you to solder the connector to the block and there are other non-LVC 18x models that have…

Inexpensive, compact GPS device for high-precision PPS series time.

I have a Garmin 18x LVC GPS connected to a serial card installed in a Debian Linux 'squeeze' box (which comes with the Setserial, GPSD and NTP configured). USB based GPS devices are useless for accurate time setting. The GPS 18x LVC requires 5 volts (red wire) and for this I use a special StarTech.com 1 Port PCI RS232 Powered Serial Adapter Card (PCI1S650PW). The card can be configured to provide 5 or 12 volts (or no supply) to pin 9 of the RS-232 DB-9 connector and can be powered either from…

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly

Great for timing, high sensitivity receiver

I bought the GPS 18x LVC for its high accuracy of 1 pulse per second for NTP timing purposes. This output is not available on other GPS 18x models. For those who are only interested in navigation and not accurate timekeeping, the GPS 18x USB model is probably the best option. want. I decided to connect the GPS to a small circuit board that supplies power to the GPS, has a fuse and LEDs to indicate the status of the GPS: one LED indicates that power is being applied and the other LED indicates…

Pros
  • Great for a small home
