The birds did not use the feeder at first, preferring to use my old feeder of a similar design. My wife noticed that the birds appeared to land and then hover over the perches. I put black heat shrink tubing on the perches, trimmed the length of tubing, and now the birds use it as much as they used my old feeder. Perch issues aside, the feeder is well built and easy to fill and maintain.

The finches and tits that visit my deck are happy with this feeder; Mourning doves and blue jays struggle to balance on tiny perches, but flop awkwardly - it's fun to watch them give up and stomp to their own feeding station, which has a round perch more suited to their size. Well, the good news is that it can withstand squirrels hanging on to it for seeds without breaking it (they break everything with their plastic sticks). The bad news is that squirrels can latch onto the seeds. Nice little feeder but I'm disappointed that squirrels can use it so easily. I made a few modifications as you can see in the photos. Install the tees on straight feed fences for more comfortable feeding. Cover the ends of the fittings with heat shrink tubing for better grip by birds. Also slide the heat shrink over the straight tabs for a tighter fit on the tees and use pliers to twist the heat shrink to roughen it and fit the tees better.
