Good portable coffee maker for camping

I bought this after reading about it on one of my camping bulletin boards and was very happy to find a small, lightweight coffee dispenser for camping and hiking. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. I recommend this device.

Love this article on Coffee Makers

Love the GSI Coffee Rocket. I started using it at home before I went camping. And I haven't stopped using it yet. I love this thing and for some reason my coffee tastes better. Ordered a second one for work. Easy to use and easy to clean. Just great stuff!

Will buy again and again

Okay here's the thing, don't put too much coffee grounds in this thing or it will just dribble into your cup one drop at a time. Test it several times at home to know how much to put in. Oh, and don't pack coffee in it, it's not espresso, there's no pressure, just gravity pushes the water down. If you understand all this, it will be great. I've used it throughout the mountaineering season and love it. Fits right into a GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker mug to form a complete coffee system, so to

Low drip rate on coffee makers

I love that this product is cleaner than other drip irrigation methods I have used. However, it takes forever to get coffee. I took it and used it during winter camping and the area was just packed. I use regular coffee grounds. I'll have to test this with other coffees, but the one I've usually used took so long that my coffee froze by the time it was enough to drink. If you grind your own coffee I recommend doing so as you can play with the quality of your coffee. If you don't, I recommend…

Compact, easy to use and very effective

Light and tasty coffee. Water purification and water conservation can be at odds when trying to "leave no trace”. I carry a 1 liter ziplock bag of water to rinse out the coffee rocket - I just let it thicken in the bag and the "rocket" just rinses out with coffee. When I get to a place where I can throw the set away, I rinse the bag, refill it, and start over. And yes, I know that coffee grounds are biodegradable and probably good for the environment, and I have no problem just covering them in

Requires additional O-ring if you want to use a finer grind

Great lightweight coffee maker for camping. Small enough to fit in a 0.78 liter pot so it doesn't take up any extra space in my backpack. The hole in the center of the stainless steel strainer makes it easy to rinse out the coffee when you're done, but there's too much clearance between the hole in the strainer and the stopper at the bottom of the grinder jar to use anything. but a rough cut. I have found that a 7/16 inch ID o-ring placed over the stopper in the grind cup seals it well enough…

Fantastic pour over solution

I bought this because I hate instant coffee. Boiling water is easy no matter what my hiking situation is, so I wanted something lightweight, zero-waste, simple, washable, and reusable that I can use for hiking. This little guy was perfect. The fact that it fits perfectly in the GSI cup makes me give it a 6th star. The only thing I warn people about is a) be careful of where you balance the rocket's "wings" when you put it on your mug. I haven't flipped it yet, but it feels a bit heavy when it's

Does the Job: Kitchen and Dining Room

While this "coffee maker" gets the job, its scope is limited. For those who love coffee enough to pack something to make a mug outdoors, you'll likely need more than an 8-ounce mug at a time. The GSI Coffee Rocket is well made and has a nicely designed coffee basket, but you need to make sure you have the right base. If the grind is too fine, the water will seem to compact it and make it drip very slowly. If the ground coffee is too coarse, the water will run through and you may end up with a…

The holy grail of camping/hiking coffee makers.

I've been looking for the best cup of coffee in the outback for many years. I've used everything from RDA styles somewhat similar to this one to Jetboil French Press and the like. While these options are much better than the instant coffee I started my camping career with, they still fall short in terms of usability and size. Sign up for GSI Coffee Rocket. I've heard a lot of good things about this little guy. At an extremely affordable price, it's one of the cheapest coffee maker options out…
