I had to use a good quality fan with flexible metal blades

If I had to do it again, I'd get a flexible fan and throw it in the trash through the fan clutch. Of course, I live in Florida, where it's a hundred degrees or even more all summer long. I drive a lot with frequent stops at very low speeds. I need positive airflow at low RPM and can only get it with a flex fan and no fancy fan clutch.

'May' work with your XJ

I bought this clutch to try to solve overheating problems on my '96 XJ. Pros: This thing will seriously move air! Since replacing the 160 degree thermostat and that fan clutch, I've rarely seen my Jeep go past 190 degrees during serious off road and highway driving. The bad: it's LOUD! This thing makes you sound like a dam plane when the engine revs up. He also seemed to use some energy, but not too much. Ugly: Make sure your engine mounts are ok! Fits XJ but can get tight

Put this in a '93 XJ, fits easily. But I have a 3-pipe cooler that is wider than stock so the distance between them was less than an inch. All seemed fine and dandy in normal driving, but I hit the track and there was enough deflection for the fan to touch the radiator. I now have a standard single core heatsink and the spacing is much better. I think everything will be fine, including on the track.
