This collar is not as effective as a regular prong collar as it lacks the adjustable part (chain) that attaches to the ends of a regular collar. This chain and a little padding in the middle make Herm Sprenger collars flexible and therefore effective, as they set an unpleasant stimulus without much effort. This can be somewhat helpful in preventing leash tugging, but isn't really great for training. You will find that you have to use more force with less reaction from the dog.

Clearly whoever designed the original spiked collar had incredible hand strength. It is almost impossible for a petite woman to squeeze these pins to put on or take off the collar or to adjust the size of the collar. I am a professional dog trainer and I would highly recommend these 2.25 inch Herm Sprenger Prong collars for unruly dogs especially large dogs 20lbs and up!
