I really like this mat. With just one coat, I don't have to worry about the finish peeling off during use. The downside is that the grid lines are measured in centimeters, not half an inch - there's a band marked in inches along the edge, but they don't match the grid. For someone using a standard rather than a metric grid, the grid is useless. I will not be returning it, I just marked one inch line across from the other so my ruler would line up.

I'm not a sewing or craft expert but this rug is great. It's small, but if you don't want to do a lot of work, this will work just fine. I also use it as a guide on a large mat I have and it works just as well for that too. I didn't really understand what self-healing meant, but I asked the lady at the JoAnn fabric store and that helped me buy this rug. Self-healing mats don't show or retain cuts as badly as non-healing mats. In addition, this carpet lasts longer. I hope it helps.

I chose blue because it's easy on the eye. but mostly because I fondly remember poring over architectural plans back when blueprints were blue, like this cutting mat.
