Probably needs sharpening

I'm usually fine with Irwin tools. This is an exception. I understand this is a cheaper set of bits but at least I expect them to be sharp. At least half of the ones I've used have improperly sharpened edges, rendering them almost entirely ineffective. I haven't decided yet whether to return them, I have the tools I need to clean up the edges. But buying a fuzzy Forstner set is like buying a car with no tires.

Good value for money

Good things first Wide range of sizes in a nice box. Overall pretty well done. For the price I paid this was a great purchase. Now for the cons: As a former QA in a metal fabrication factory, I can say this is not the highest quality product. It's not much work to touch them up with a file to remove many burrs on the cut edges. See two photos that show burrs, possibly because the cutting edge was sharpened too aggressively. Other photos show light areas where I put the edge of the saw down. It…

  • Great for a small home

Serrated edge and more

These bits have several disadvantages. First, the main cutting edge is VERY flat, not as cutting as other Forstner bit sets I have. Second, on the larger sizes, the main cutting edge has been ground down, creating a curve/garland on the edge. This means that the tip is a little blunt, but it also doesn't grip well. Also, the teeth on this set (and all Forstner sets with sharp external teeth) will grab wood and stop my drill when large sizes are used. This is the slowest setting with maximum…

Worked for me.: Power Drill Parts & Accessories

Drilled fourteen (14) 3" deep holes with a 1" diameter drill bit through kiln dried hickory. Speed 350 rpm in a drill. The last hole is drilled in the same way as the first. Good size chips. Pictured is the 1" drill bit after drilling 14 holes. A little wear on one tooth but the edges of the "blade" were as sharp as when they first started. Holes.))) I don't know why it is that way I've also drilled several holes in the same hickory with 7/8", 5/8" and 1/2" drill bits. Same results.

Pros
  • Easily drills quality holes and flat-bottomed pockets
Cons
  • Miscellaneous Miscellaneous

A set of SUPERB quality BUT the size in the case is hard to read

I would give 5 stars. However, there are two things that some (like me) should be aware of: First, they are really great and sharp beats. There is nothing wrong with performance and quality. They are of excellent quality. You get a lot for your money. I just want to delete this part! 1) All numbers/measurements are reversed inside the case. When you open the case (the top flips up) you need to rotate it 180 degrees to read the measurements next to the drill slots. Maybe it could just be mine…

Pros
  • Significantly reduces cutting time compared to standard Forstner bits
Cons
  • Easily torn

good pieces; good value

These bits will work well for me for years to come as I used a very cheap no name set I bought 20 years ago for everyday use that I do as an amateur had, the creation of Pine Block Derby race cars by AWANA. , drilling holes for countersunk screws on small woodwork etc. I have provided photos of exactly what I received with bits, a storage/carrying case (which has no handle) and photos of a glossy cardboard envelope. Came in a plastic storage box. Might be interesting, I've also included a few…
