The backlight turns on full and bright, but the display itself is dark and you have to turn the contrast up to the maximum to see what's on. It made me question the code I wrote there before I figured it out. resulting in about 2 hours to figure it out. Buy another brand.

I bought several of these for a course I am teaching on the Raspberry Pi interface. The blocks arrived well packaged. They appear to be well made and all of the ones we hooked up worked right out of the box. It's hard to beat this kind of performance at this price point. You'll have to write driver code to talk to them if you're on a Pi, but there's plenty of help online for that.

If you buy these then you probably have some intention or technical skill when it comes to these types of devices. It's not plug and play and you'll most likely need to download drivers, but no matter what specific project you're working on. Build quality for the price is good and the price is reasonable and I doubt you'd really mind if either of them burned out after a month or so, although I haven't had any such issues.

In the world of Arduino compatible boards it's accepted that "documentation" is just a library and example sketches. If you want to know what you really need for the commands, you have to search a lot and reverse engineer the library. No documentation but it's a 1602 with a PCF8574 chip in a backpack. This is indeed a common setup and there are many libraries for it. In addition to the power supply, only 2 wires are required to set up I2C. My address was 27 and there was yellow tape on the USB port. These LCD's are great value for money and both of my worked great but they come with no specs. With the 8574 interface board on the back, you only need 4 connections to the Arduino Uno board, one 5V, one GND, A4 to SDA and A5 to SDL. You will also need a zip file containing the Liquid Crystal PFC8574 interface library. This is a good product but I have returned two of these. The first is due to the lack of a display. The second reason is that they shipped it without the extra serial port board, making it a 4-wire display.
