The best oven there is!

Much better ovens than more expensive brands. Stainless steel is a heavier grade, making it extremely strong even when heavy and not deformed by extreme heat. Very easy and quick to set up. The baseplate is not fully vented which causes charcoal to collect in a partially smooth section of the platter and not on other brands which have holes throughout the platter that do not hold charcoal. Holes are just around the perimeter of the panel. Make sure you only prepare food over fire and not on an…

Nicely done. Works great and is a lot of fun.

I chose Kampmate because it is an American company. It's probably still made abroad, but oh well. It is well made and has a good design. I was skeptical that this steel would withstand a hot fire, but my fears were unfounded. Like all box ovens of this type, they warp when hot but return to normal when cold. It's too hard to throw a backpack 50 miles, but it's still fun. I haven't tried it yet, but it will work very well. It is very stable and durable. The Dutch Oven will have no problem with…

Know what you are getting

This is a smart little oven. It burns hot, requires no additional fuel, and is a joy to light a mini campfire when camping (local laws and weather permitting). Cut yourself collecting this slab if you try to force it. Another downside I've found with this stove is that it coats your dishes in creosote, which can make cleaning quite a chore if you don't have direct access to water. . The stove itself has a carrying case that protects other items in my backpack, but the dishes I have to clean the

Great for what it is.

I have a friend who swears these biomass stoves are the best alternative to gas or open fire so I decided to give it a try. I myself am a fan of open fire / tripod / smoldering bed. I just did a backyard field test and have mixed feelings. As a stove I give 5 stars. It's durable, easy to install, and the mouth is big enough to fill with whatever fuel you might have. Using a lighter and kindling, it took me about 3 minutes (2 tries) to get the fire started and another 15 minutes to cook and cook

Absolutely brilliant simplicity and amazing performance!

The main reason I bought this stove was to heat water to make soup or rehydrate freeze dried meals during daytime mountain hikes. All day from dark to dark. The nice bonus of this stove is that I can build a large fire that is very well contained but still puts out a lot of heat. A campfire is a great mood booster on a cold, rainy, or frosty day and I think KampMate can handle that with ease. The oven is a little heavy, but it doesn't pack anything. Compared to my oil or gas fired stoves, with…

Great Wood Stove in Backpacking Stoves

I have been a long-time supporter of the Emberlit range of stoves and have recently switched to ultra-lightweight camping stoves. Also, I've wanted a larger version of the original Emberlit stove for a long time. Well, kampMATE is exactly that. According to the manufacturer, kampMATE is 30% larger than the standard Emberlit. Without measurement I have no reason to dispute this. The internal volume is definitely larger and the plates are noticeably thicker. Simple arithmetic shows that the…
