Description of ๐Ÿ’ป Enhance Your Computing Experience with the High-Speed Libre Computer 32GB eMMC 5.x Module

ULTRA FAST FLASH STORAGE FOR LIBRE COMPUTER BOARDS: Designed specifically for Libre Computer Boards that support the latest eMMC 5.x standard, our modules enable up to 128GB of attached flash storage with up to 250MB/s read speed and up to 125MB/s write speed*. HIGHER ENDURANCE STORAGE: eMMC flash storage is more robust than MicroSD SD cards for long term mix read/write workloads for applications involving sensitive or secure data storage. ALTERNATIVE TO SSD: SSD drives require additional power and an USB bridge chip that adds latency and limits throughput. eMMC offers a more cost effective and higher performance solution for embedded systems. UNPARALLELED RANDOM READ/WRITE PERFORMANCE: Featuring up to 10K random 4K block performance*, eMMC is up to 5X faster than UHS MicroSD cards for common operating system access patterns. SUPPORTED BY ALL OPERATING SYSTEMS: Libre Computer Project offers the latest upstream software support for all of our boards and accessories. eMMC modules can be accessed via u-boot, Linux, Android, and more!

The flash process at AML-S905X-CC (Le Potato) is not reliable

The flash process at Le Potato is terrible and unreliable at best. normal tools, adapters, etc. work and cannot be used on any other device. Since Le Potato's boot order is loaded into emmc before the SD card, it may never work. The tools provided often crash or freeze, so the flash process may have to be repeated many times before it succeeds.

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Not trendy

Worked with some research.

Done! Probably not for those unfamiliar with single board computers. First, a dummy operating system will boot on the board. I had to boot lePotato Ubuntu from the SD card and hot-plug the emmc into the board. Then from Ubuntu terminal I ran lc_redetect_emmc and lc_distro_transfer. I followed the instructions on the manufacturer's website.

Pros
  • ULTRA-FAST FLASH MEMORY FOR LIBRE COMPUTER BOARDS: Specially designed for Libre computer boards supporting the latest eMMC 5.x standard, our modules allow you to connect up to 128 GB of flash memory with read speeds of up to 250 MB/s and read speeds of up to 125 MB/s. write speed*.
Cons
  • New competitors have appeared

Unreliable flash process on AML-S905X-CC (Le Potato)

The flashing process for Le Potato is terrible and unreliable at best. The card does NOT use a standard connector, so none of the normal tools, adapters, etc. will work and cannot be used with other devices. Since Le Potato's boot order is loaded into emmc before the SD card, it may never work. The tools provided often crash or freeze, so the flash process may have to be repeated. Many times before success.

Pros
  • SSD ALTERNATIVE: SSDs require additional performance and a USB bridge chip that increases latency and limits bandwidth. eMMC offers a lower cost and higher performance solution for embedded systems.
Cons
  • I don't have much dislike for it, it's ok

It works. Installation and setup can be easier.

Installation and setup could be easier. Software support is rather haphazard. They don't provide a way to put the included operating system (Android version) back onto the module after replacing it with something else. You can't just plug it into your computer and flash it. Adding a microUSB connector and the hardware required to do so would make it MUCH EASIER and more flexible to use. Or even making a separate USB adapter that you could plug it into for flashing would be way better than theโ€ฆ

Pros
  • UNMATCHED RANDOM READ/WRITE PERFORMANCE: With up to 10K random 4K block performance*, eMMC is up to 5x faster than UHS MicroSD cards for common operating system access patterns.
Cons
  • The list will be long.
