I have ordered many of these from Amazon and Ebay, the first time I had problems. 2 out of 4 weren't programmed, didn't even light up. However a good product. you shouldn't have to send them back. EDIT: Ordered another set, none of them connected to wifi. They're programmed, but I don't have a power indicator.

I love these things. You can use 4 I/O pins. GPIO-0 and GPIO-2 are labeled and ready to use, but you can use GPIO-1 and GPIO-3 (TX/RX) if you prefer. I replaced the SPI flash chip with a W25Q32FVSIG which increases the flash by 1MB. Memory up to 4MB (32MB) like most regular ESP8266 modules. I have never worked with an ESP8266 but after a few hours of research I decided to give it a try. It took almost a day to figure out how to connect via serial port and send AT commands. After finishing this part, I knew I had a few more hours to spend on the Arduino IDE programming examples, and I was ready to start the real work. I already have more ideas than WLAN modules. So far I've killed one of the 5 volt modules but if the others hold up I'll be sure to order more in the future.
