Mann-Filter W 950/4 Spin-on Oil Filter: Superior Performance for Efficient Oil Filtration Review

This filter is mandatory for VW B5 and B5.5 Passat. It's huge, so it supplies the much-needed amount of oil that these cars really need. I used to be able to buy them from Pepboys for less than $10, but they didn't sell them anymore. It is even more convenient to buy them from Revain.

Bought for my 1.8 liter turbocharged engine like many others to solve the dreaded sludge problem. Change it at every oil change, but I'm willing to bet this monster will last 2 changes. Huge compared to the original OEM but fits just perfect. So big that it not only increases your filtration but also your oil volume, so a win-win situation. Just check the gap, on my A4 B6 it didn't hit the subframe by a millimeter. Have fun driving!

I've been using these filters on my 2003 Passat 1.8T for about a decade. This is an oversized filter that is out of spec but ask anyone with a 1.8 ton engine trying to avoid the deposit problem our engines can have and they will recommend this filter. It just intrudes and gets close to the motor mount, but not close enough to cause problems. So far the engine is still running so I trust this filter and Mobil1 0w-40.

After replacing the turbo due to bearing failure I wanted to add extra filter capacity. The thing is huge, it barely fits in, but it fits. The main benefit I see in using it is that due to its size you effectively increase the volume of the sump which is good for these 1.8 ton engines. I sent an oil sample to Blackstone Labs from my last oil change at 4500 miles. They specifically noted that the "oil filtration was excellent" values were less than 0.1% insolubles.
