It's definitely well made and safe to climb. Each step is definitely a little narrower than I thought it would be, but my 70-pounder managed. I wanted something I could use to trick him into getting in the back seat, but unfortunately that only works for the cargo area. The steps are too wide to fit in the rear seat doors.
