Great tool for fixing bent filter threads on lenses

I bought these after watching a lens repair video on Adam Savage's YouTube channel. I have two Mamiya lenses, both of which were dropped or bumped in the studio in a past life. I only noticed that when I tried to screw on a circular polarizer and a Cokin filter ring for color filters. The product is very durable and well made. It was well packed. I watched the video several times to make sure the technique is correct. I have a small metal hammer from another project, I clamped the vise in place

Pros
  • Lens accessory
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks

First the design of the tool impressed me, then the weight. I am a very powerful instrument. Use it diligently, you don't want to break the lens glass. My 72mm UV filter glass fell out of the round frame and allowed the glass to float freely on the lens glass. The thin filter frame was too thin to remove. I broke the loose glass to remove it and tried to remove the filter like armor, causing damage but not removing it. I gave up and left my original lens glass unprotected and prone to damageโ€ฆ

Serious design flaw, poor assembly. Not recommended.

This tool is used to repair dented or out-of-round lens filter threads. They all have a universal standard thread pitch of 0.75mm (for sizes within the tooling range). However, the jaws of the tool have a pitch of 1.0mm, not 0.75mm. As a result, the jaws do not properly engage the thread being repaired, effectively causing further damage to the lens. Also, my unit arrived with loose parts due to poor assembly. The guide rods were not fully threaded into the fixed jaw and the set screws holdingโ€ฆ

Just paid for itself. So pleasant!

Beautiful vintage lens with a filter ring that made a really gross ridged dent (I assume it had to do with the tarmac) about 2cm long, again with a UV filter and I'm wearing a big smile, thanks for that filter ring repair vise from the good guys at Neewer. I looked up a YouTube tutorial, cut a protective circle out of cardboard to protect the front element (in retrospect I think it wasn't necessary and it got in the way a bit) and spent 10 minutes max on this effort. Voila! There is still aโ€ฆ
