Good lens Nikon f1.8AF-D 85mm

Classic full frame portrait lens length; D-type autofocus that can be used in Nikon film cameras as well as most higher-end Nikon DSLRs (requires in-camera motor). Fairly fast focusing, easy to do manually. A bit soft at f1.8 (which is to be expected), but very sharp at f4.0. Shooting wide open creates a nice blurred background (bokeh) that makes the subject stand out nicely. This is one of the most important lenses you will ultimately need. On my D7200 (DX, frame) it equates to 125mm, which is

Focus problems with SLR lenses

I like this lens and the bokeh effect, but unfortunately the focus was not good. I sent the lens back to Nikon and they have told me that the lens is as intended, but because "this is older technology it may lack focus on a regular basis". my copy is openly not too soft, but very subtle. Bokeh is perfect for portraits, I like it very much. If you get the focus right, you may need to blur the image, especially if you're photographing a woman, as every little wrinkle on her is visible! killer optics and assembly; but focusing can be difficult

This works reliably on any Nikon, although the outdated screw-drive autofocus system makes it less useful on less compatible models. The depth of field at f/1.8 is so shallow that users will find it difficult to focus on moving subjects if they are limited to manual focus (such as with the D60 or D5000). On my D90 this lens is great - razor sharp with professional looking bokeh. I never liked the built in flash when using my other lens (Nikon 16-85mm) but I found that images taken with my 85mmโ€ฆ

Sharp portrait lens, perfect bokeh.

All in all this is a fantastic lens with excellent clarity, sharpness and bokeh. This is by far the sharpest lens I have. I bought it for my D80 and it worked great. However, shortly after I bought the D3300 I had no idea that this lens would not work with it. I still don't understand why the 5000 and 3000 series cameras don't have an autofocus motor. My impression is that this lens works on all Nikon DSLRs. However, it still works, you just have to focus manually. This is a great portraitโ€ฆ

Looks like a very good lens but arrived with no box or papers

Update: I returned this lens due to chromatic aberrations which were visible in almost every shot. I photographed a model dressed in black against a light background against the light, but strange colors appeared at the edges of the shadows and at the border of the subject and the background. I shoot professionally and the LightRoom settings have little effect on those settings. This hasn't happened with other lenses I use on the same camera. I look forward to shooting more with this lens asโ€ฆ

Excellent glass for your money.

If you can't afford or don't need an 85mm f/1.4 lens, this is an excellent glass, typical high quality Nikkor, good at f1, 8 with some purple fringes and CA in some lighting conditions. It focuses quickly and accurately on the D90 (doesn't work on the D60, D50 and D40, only focuses on the body screw) and never misses even in low light. Resolution is good, allowing you to bump the ISO up a notch or two to compensate for a low-light situation where it's easy to hit the spot when focusing. Greatโ€ฆ

Excellent bokeh, but chromatic aberrations are visible.

The 85 1.8D lens was amazing for shots. It costs around $350-425 and offers beautiful bokeh. Portraits are its specialty and I was able to get plenty of creamy shots indoors and out with its large aperture. If there was enough space, I was still able to take group shots with the crop sensor. It's sharp and gets sharper when stopped. Unfortunately, it shows chromatic aberration with purple-green halos, especially when shooting wide open. The metal construction is what you'd expect from Nikon and
