I hooked this up to an old Kenwood system and a KD-5100 turntable. I used the tubes that came with it, but the tinny sound didn't bother me. I bought different tube sets, a set of "ugly" Mullard 12AX7 and a set of Russian 6N2P-EV rockets with a silver shield. The price difference between the two sets is slightly better, the Mullards are slightly better, but the 6N2Ps are also excellent and offer a full midrange with great highs and lows. I previously bought a Yaqin MS-23B as a phono stage. While I liked the sound I got from it, it had a very strong hum that other owners assured me was part of a design flaw.
