Just buy it - it's great.

Did an excellent job. I have a 650c Trek single track with spacers in the back and 3 in the front. This allows me to pump 3 rings forward with no fuss, noise and low maintenance. The build quality is second to none.

Super great tensioner!

Great chain tensioner although tight. It can't cope with the very long chain on my Rans LWB recumbent. I also need some sort of guide in the middle of the frame. But for most uses. 21 teeth or less, that's cat pajamas.

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Useless features

Before Melvin's purchase, the single speed chain tension was taken from a fifteen year old Alivio derailleur on my Ibis cross bike. Did it lead me there? Yes. Was it done with style? Not far. Now I might consider setting up my bike as a Dinglespeed, which I could do very well. Thank you Paul

Good chain tensioner.

The chain tensioner is very well made, has spacers for adjusting the chain line, strong spring and great workmanship. old chain tensioner Works fine with a 22 tooth gearbox, but when I need to remove the rear wheel it's almost impossible to do without removing the bike frame's chain tensioner. I really like this piece of metal, but it's not perfect.

Immediate recovery. A very solid decision.

What a positive change for my single speed conversion. I bought an entry level single speed conversion kit so I could decide if I liked single speed. I like a speed, but the entry-level tensioner made the chain "slip" when I had to pedal hard. This Paul Melvin wraps most of the chain around the cog and I immediately noticed a huge improvement in my bike's drivetrain. It was easy to install. I had to add two links to my chain.

Great chain tensioner for single speed frames

Quality product with good performance. Paul Melvin is well known in the cycling community for making quality custom pieces. So they can be a bit expensive. I bought this spanner to make my "Urban Street Bike" with 3-speed hub easier to handle. Mainly so I don't have to worry about adjusting the chain to the exact length with the frame's rear hub bolts when swapping out the front sprocket, which can sometimes be PITA. I should note that I bought it back on October 5, 2011 for $57.37. It looks…

Effective mechanical tension

Basically a very solid kit. All the parts fit together snugly, except for those specifically designed to move, and once installed, they don't rattle or wobble at all. Like an extension of my bike frame. The geometry is such that the whole assembly is compact and very flat; The upper thrust wheel is further in front of the overrunning clutch than below. Despite its apparent size, the spring exerts enough pressure to keep the chain fully tensioned on all three of my chainrings. Even on my…

Overall I'm happy with it

I've been using it for a few days now and I'm generally happy with it. Screwing it into the derailleur was easy enough, but getting it to work without a chainring took a bit of work. Ultimately it was my fault for not carefully reading the instructions on Paul's website. I mounted it on a cyclocross bike, so my chainring and gears are very different than those on a mountain bike, which is probably where most people wear them. Almost all of my problems stem from the fact that I haven't seen a…
